Vaishnava Varuthini Ekadashi

About Varuthini Ekadashi :

Varuthini Ekadashi also known as Baruthani Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Chaitra or Vaisakha (as per North Indian Calendar) which in the Gregorian calendar falls in April or May.
Varuthini Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Varaha or Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu (fifth avatar) to get rid of all your sins, sorrows and griefs.
The name of this ekadashi “Varuthini” means armoured or protected, hence it is believed that a person who observes this ekadashi vrata with utmost devotion, is protected from all harm and evil and gains good fortune.

Varuthini Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, one upon a time there was a King named Mandhata, who was from the Ikshvaku dynasty. He was a very wise and noble king.
King Mandhata was known for his Meditation. Once while he was performing meditation, a wild bear came nearby and soon started chewing his leg. Later the wild boar dragged the king into nearby woods. Still the king did not break his meditation, he calmly kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu in his mind. Lord Vishnu got pleased by his act of meditation and soon appeared and killed the wild boar with his Sudarshan Chakra.
Till then the wild boar had ate Kings legs and king was sad because of that. Lord Vishnu told the King to visit Mathura and worship the Varaha avatar of his on Varuthini Ekadashi day to get back his leg.
The King visited Mathura and worshipped the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu on Varuthini Ekadashi with great devotion and soon got back his leg.
Since that miracle, people of the region started observing Varuthini Ekadashi vrata with great devotion.

Varuthini Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :

The Puja Vidhi performed during Varuthini Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s.
On this day, the Varaha or Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu (fifth avatar) is worshipped.
On the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day, i.e., on dwadashi day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.

Varuthini Ekadashi Mantra :

You can chant any one of these Vishnu Mantra and Slokas on this auspicious day of Varuthini Ekadashi – Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram or Vishnu Ashtottaram.

Varuthini Ekadashi Date, Baruthani Ekadashi 2013, Varudhini Ekadashi Date, when is Varuthini Ekadashi in 2013?, Baruthani Ekadashi Date, 5th May 2013
Varuthini Ekadashi is one of the important ekadashi observed by the hindu community around the world. This ekadashi is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu, especially his fifth avatar Vamana. Significance of this ekadashi is explained to the Yudhishtira by Lord Krishna in the Bhavishya Purana. By observing this vrat, one can attain moksha.
According to north Indian purnimanth calenders, Varuthini Ekadashi is observed on krishna paksha ekadasi of the Vaishakha month. According to amavasyant calenders, it falls in the month of Chaitra. Both indicates the same day and this year, Varuthini Ekadashi is on Sunday, 5th May 2013.
Varuthini Ekadashi arrives on Chaitra Vad 11. Observing a full fasting vrat on this day is rewarded with happiness in this world and the next. This vrat is the destroyer of all sins and elevates the observer on the path to ultimate salvation.

Great kings like Mandhaata, Dhundhumaar and others have achieved salvation in Swarg by observing many such Ekadashi vrats.

Once Mahadevji beheaded the fifth head of Brahmaji and was cursed for this. But he was freed from the sins and curse due to this vrat of Varuthini Ekadashi. Performing continuous penance for a thousand years equates and provides the same fruits as keeping the vrat of Varuthini Ekadashi.

Giving the daughter away as a daan on her wedding (kanyadaan) is termed as the most absolute daan a person can give to anyone in this world. However the vrat of this Ekadashi gives a person similar fruits to a hundred kanyadaans. On the day before this Ekadashi, devotees must eat once a day and observe a full fast on the actual Ekadashi day. One must perform continuous devotion during the day and night singing the full glory of Almighty Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan.
The importance of Ekadasi for worshippers of Sriman Narayana cannot be emphasized enough. Ekadasi is also called "Hari-Vasara" (Lord Hari's day).
All our elders have steadfastly observed the Ekadasi-Dwadasi vratam or "Upavasam" on this sacred day. Upa means near and Vasam means stay. Stay close to Hari contemplating on His kalyana gunas. This is the summum bonum of Ekadasi vratam.

Do we need to fast on Ekadasi

Since upavasam does not (directly) connote fasting, a question may be asked as to the need to fast on Ekadasi. Shastras give unequivocal answers. The following quotes from our shastras should clear any doubts in this regard:
ekAdashyAM tu yo bhuN^kte mohenAvR^itachetasaH |
shuklAyAmatha kR^ishhNAyAM nirayaM yAti sa dhruvam.h

One who eats on ekAdashI on account of an intellect clouded by delusion; be it the shukla- or the kR^ishhNa-paxa, (s) he goes to hell, this is certain. ashhTavarshhAdhiko yastu ashItirnahi pUryate
yo bhuN^kte mAnavaH pApo vishhNorahani chAgate

One who is greater than eight years of age, but has indeed not completed eighty; the human who eats when Vishnu's day arrives, consumes verily sin itself.
In addition, several scientific findings go to prove the benefits of fasting on one's health. This should further reinforce one's determination to fast.
How to break your fast on Dwadasi

Timely breaking of the fast on Dwadasi is as important as observing the fast on Ekadasi. Normally, the fast must be broken before trayOdasi arrives. If there is insufficient time, the fasting can be broken with water. From the ShastrAs we find:
pArayitvodakenApi bhuJNjano naiva dushhyati |
ashitAnashitA yasmAdApo vidvadbhirIritAH |

aMbhasA kevalenaiva karishhye vratapAraNam.h
[If there is insufficient time] there is no flaw if water is consumed for pAraNe; for it is stated by the learned that water has the property that when consumed, it is still as if one has not consumed; thus, with only water, do I perform the ceremonial paraNe. If there is not enough time for a proper pAraNe, then the fast may be broken merely by sipping water; there is no flaw of multiple pAraNe-s on this account, as the wise have decreed that such a procedure does not count as multiple pAraNe-s. Having performed the ceremonial pAraNe in this manner, one may have a proper meal later, although the time later may not be appropriate for pAraNe itself.
dvAdashI na pramoktavyA yAvadAyuH pravartate |
archanIyo hR^ishhIkesho vishuddhenAntarAtmanA

The dvAdashI is not to be neglected, as long as life goes on; Hrshikesha is to be worshipped [for so long] with a clean psyche. Concerning the food for Dwadasi pAranE, one should avoid using anything related to plantains (vazhai kaay, ilai etc.), also avoid chilies and tamarind. One can substitute pepper for chilies and lemon or dry mango powder for tamarind. Include sundaikaay , nellikaay, and akathik keerai.
An Instance from the Life of Swami Desika

Swami Desikan, who we all know lived a full veda prayam, in his old age was observing Ekadasi vratam. The head priest of the Sri Ranganatha temple seeing swami in a very weak condition offered him the koil prasadam and told Swami that Lord Ranganatha Himself had ordered him to offer the prasadam. To this Swami replied that the Lord would not have said that and politely refused to partake the prasadam. Such was the steadfastness of our Acharya in observing the sastraic codes.
Ekadasi -- Supreme of all Vratas

There is a saying that: " Na DwadasyAt param Vratam". Therefore observing the Ekadasi vratam is equivalent to performing many Yagnyas. Most of us are familiar with the story of Ambarisha. What's more, one becomes dear to our Lord Narayana.

With the ekAdashI as fire, and sin as fuel; [the latter] gets incinerated, O King, even if it be obtained of hundreds of lifetimes (From Bhaghavatam). Therefore, while other actions can bring some benefits, none of them quite matches up to the power of an ekAdashI in terms of removing the accumulation of sins, which brings one misery.
Bavishyothara Puranam describes the glory of Varuthini Ekadashi which falls on the wanning period of moon.  Lord Krishna explains to King Yudhishtira about the austerities should be followed on the day of Varuthini Ekadashi.

Lord Krishna narrates that the observer should strictly follow the austerities from the previous day of Ekadashi by consuming meal once and abstaining from all the sensual pleasures.  Moreover, the food consumed should be self-cooked in earthen pots. and consumption of meat, chickpeas, honey, spinach, dal should be strictly avoided.

On the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, the observer should not indulge in gambling, sleeping, tattletale or engage in any of the sinful deeds.  The observer should fast on this day, worship Lord Hari chanting His glories with utmost faith and devotion and keep awake in the night. On the day after Varuthini Ekadashi (Dwadashi) after ablutions and worship of Lord Hari with Bhog,  Dwadashi Parana should be followed within the specified time.

Lord Krishna continued, King Mandata and Dhuntumara were the strict followers of Ekadashi, which brought them the highest of the piety, freed them from the cycles of birth and death.   Observing the Varuthini Ekadashi brings the remarkable piousness known as 'Salvation'.  It also provides good fortune, perpetual happiness and eradicates all the sins committed.   One can achieve the merit,  that is equivalent to observing austerities for ten thousand years by observing Varuthini Ekadashi.  The piousness includes, donating 40 kilos of gold during the time of solar eclipse in the righteous land Kurukshetra.

Lord Krishna explains about the types of charities.  Donating an elephant is superior than donating a horse, donating a land is superior than donating an elephant, donating  sesame seeds are greater than  donating a piece of land, donating gold is greater than donating the sesame seeds, donating food grains is greater than donating gold.  Donating food grains earns the highest merit in the charities  which is equivalent to donating cows, by this act one can satisfy deities, forefathers and all the living entities.   Last but not the least giving knowledge to others is one of the most rewarding and highest among all the charities.

Lord Krishna explains some of the heinous acts that mount up the sins are:  giving away  a girl child  in exchange of money  out of greed or for livelihood is the highest among the sins, the sinner of the above act born as cat in his/her next birth and the latter remains in  the hell until the total annihilation to the Universe takes place.   The parents who perform 'Kanya Dhanam' as per the prescribed rules and rituals attain the piety which is difficult to count or describe not even by Chitra Gupa, who is the chief in the ministry of Abode of Lord Yama.   Lord Krishna declared that by following Varuthini Ekadashi with utmost faith and devotion, one could attain all the devoutness.

Whoever reads or listens to the glories of Varuthini Ekadashi would attain the merit of donating one thousand cow and would be  freed from all the sins and attain the Abode of Lord Sri Hari.
